How to understand a short line with Contexts

A short video may not explain the conversation. You hear Hello?, but do not know who is being answered or what happens next. Contexts in Playphrase.me provides neighboring lines from the same source.

What the neighboring lines explain

Results for "hello" include Hello? from A Sunday Affair (2023). Alone, the excerpt gives you only a brief response. The next line is It's Toyin, as the caller introduces themselves. The conversation moves on to an apology for missing dinner and a suggestion to meet.

Now you can place Hello? at the start of a phone conversation. You do not have to infer everything from one line's intonation: the following lines supply the missing information.

Contexts can answer other questions too. What is someone responding to with I don't think so? What does That's what I meant refer to? When the missing information is nearby, a few neighboring lines can connect the phrase to the conversation.

There are limits to this context. The list contains available excerpts around the scene. A relationship's history or an event from the beginning of the movie may fall outside it. If the neighboring lines do not explain the situation, avoid drawing conclusions about a character's intentions from the short excerpt alone.

Once the situation is clear, return to the original search and hear the same phrase in other scenes. Familiar words can belong to a very different conversation.
