How to Practice with Common Phrases When You Don't Know What to Search For

Common Phrases is a ready-made catalog of English phrases in Playphrase.me. You don't need to come up with a query first: narrow the catalog, then choose a phrase from the list or let Playphrase.me pick one from the current page.

Set the level range first

Start with Level. Its two fields set the lower and upper bounds. For phrases from A2 through B1, choose A2 in the first field and B1 in the second.

Add another filter only when it matches what you want to practice:

• Only questions keeps questions;
• Only idioms keeps idioms;
• Topic filters the catalog by subject;
• Emotion and Polarity narrow it by emotional tone.

For example, set the range to A2–B1, turn on Only questions, and choose Travel under Topic. The list includes Where would you like to go?, a question that asks someone to choose or suggest a destination. Selecting it opens several video quotes in which the same words are spoken.

Don't switch on every filter by default. If the list is empty, remove one filter and check it again.

Listen to the same words in several scenes

With a phrase selected, Playphrase.me shows multiple video quotes that use those words. Compare the pace, intonation, and words immediately around the phrase. Keep Focus on for a short fragment around the query; turn it off when you need broader context.

Let the page choose the next phrase

Once you have heard enough examples, use the dice button. On desktop, Ctrl+Space does the same thing. Both choose another phrase only from the current page of the filtered catalog.

Random selection does not repeat a phrase until the current page is exhausted. Move to the next catalog page to broaden the pool. When the order matters, choose phrases from the list yourself.

When the page is complete

After random selection has gone through every phrase on the current page, Playphrase.me offers two choices: replay the page or open the next group. On the last page, the second choice returns to the first page.

Open Search & Learn and choose Common Phrases. For a first pass, use the A2–B1 range and one additional filter.
