Find an English phrase and hear it in different scenes

These short guides explain how to recover a line from a few words, unpack an expression, repeat a line with the recording, or find examples for a lesson.

Find the missing middle of a phrase

If you remember the beginning and end of a phrase, put * between them. The wildcard stands for one or more missing words.

One result is carry our work forward: our work fills the wildcard.

Choose a task

The same phrase can be used for listening practice, vocabulary work, source search, or a lesson.

Query, examples, and context

Do not reconstruct the whole line before searching. Start with the words you remember, then refine the query from the results.

  1. 01Start with what you rememberIt can be one word, several words, or an exact phrase.
  2. 02Build the queryEnter the words as they are. Add double quotes for an exact sequence or an asterisk for a gap.
  3. 03Repeat one recordingChoose one clip, check the full line, and repeat that particular performance.
  4. 04Open the surrounding contextIf the short line is not enough, open Contexts to see what was said around it.
